Girls Incorporated of Bay County (formerly Girls Club) has provided national researched-based educational programming since December 1974 in Bay County, which has benefited thousands of girls and countless families. We offer inspiring programs with a vision that encourages all girls to view the world without limits. Our mission is to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold!
Breaking the cycle of poverty through Educational Programming!
All programs involve a combination of mastering physical, intellectual and emotional goals. Each program does not exist in isolation from the others; the interwoven format gives attendees the tools to develop into well rounded young women. Every girl that participates in Girls Incorporated rotates through all seven programs: Careers and Life Planning; Culture and Heritage; Leadership and Community Action; Health and Sexuality; Self Reliance and Life Skills; Sports and Adventure; and Special Activities. Our programs address the most vital national concerns including; establishing career goal and developing life planning skills, math and science education, pregnancy and drug abuse prevention, media literacy, adolescent health, violence prevention and sports participation. All programs are taught within age appropriate bounds. We encourage our girls to become involved in the community by providing volunteer opportunities to help meet the needs of others. This empowers our girls by illustrating the change we can bring to our community and world.
Single Gender Arena + Grade Specific Programming = SUCCESS!
Girls Incorporated of Bay County (Girls Inc.) uniquely provides an atmosphere where girls can develop their character and confidence without inhibitions or limitations imposed by a multi gender arena. We are the only after-school and summer program that offers educational programming on a daily basis and divides the students by grade groups in separate classrooms. We have a phenomenal after-school staff of five teachers, one teacher per twenty-five girls! We double our teaching staff during our summer programming to maintain our teacher to student ratio.
Our Foundation: Education, Citizenship, and Community!
Although the struggles of being a non profit organization during a national recession has been challenging, Girls Inc. continues to succeed because of our dedicated staff, Board Members, and community support. The daily operation of maintaining our building, bus and vans, and overhead costs is indeed our greatest challenge. Regardless of the financial struggles, our girls continue to thrive demonstrated by the outcomes of our programming. We are resourceful in forming alliances throughout the community that builds upon what our girls are learning at our Center. One of many examples is when we joined St. Andrews Community Garden as their first group of students to learn the value of planting, growing, and harvesting delicious nutritional food. Currently, this relationship continues as we plant sunflowers at the Ponce Plantation located at Gulf Coast State College. To further this learning adventure, we have been awarded a greenhouse and will plant, grow, harvest and sell sunflowers! We are diligent in our endeavor to provide stellar programming, including community activism and service; which empowers our girls and prepares them for leadership roles at school, in future jobs, and as models of good citizenry throughout their lives.
Low Programming Rates yield HIGH Performance Outcomes!
Throughout the most difficult financial times our county has seen in decades, we have maintained our rates at fifty to seventy-five percent less than most other services offered to working parents who want to avoid a latch-key environment. We have worked tenaciously to promote our programming through news worthy events that has kept us in the public eye and developed allies in the community who support our Mission through Corporate Sponsorship, Event Sponsorship, Grant Opportunities, Volunteerism, and In-Kind Contributions of Service.
Fiduciary Responsibility:Financial Integrity
Fund development initiatives support the daily operations of our Center. Therefore, maintenance and improvements to our facility are done on a volunteer or in-kind basis. Although our mission is substantial, our operating budget reflects our management and fundraising expenses are under 12% with 88% spent on program services. We purposely keep our expenses at a bare minimum in order to offer our programming at affordable rates to low income families.
